Chapter 3: Standard Radar Operations
3.1 Introduction
Thischapterprovidesdetailedinstructionsforthestandardoperationsofyour
Pathfinder radar.Additional functions, that are availableon integrated
systemswithappropriatedatasources,aredescribedinChapter 4.Ifyouhave
acombinedradar/chartdisplayreferto Chapter 5 and Chapter 6for
information on chartingoperations.
Youcanusethischapterwiththeradardisplaysettosimulatormode,oronthe
waterafter you haveinstalledandsetup yourPathfindersystem.
Thischapter coversthe followingtopics:
Rangecontrol.
Interpreting and adjustingthe radarpicture,including adjustingthegain,
seaclutter andrain clutter,changingthetargetsdisplay,andtuningthe
radar.
Measuring range(distances) and bearingsusing VariableRange Markers
(VRMs)andElectronic BearingLines(EBLs).
Setting upguard zonesand handling alarms.
Using MARPAfortarget tracking and riskanalysis.
Note:Until you are familiarwith interpreting theradar display,you should
takeeveryopportunityto comparethe radar’s displaypatternswithvisual
targets,suchas other vessels,buoys and coastalstructures.You shouldprac-
ticeharbourandcoastalnavigationduringdaylightandinclearweathercon-
ditions.

aspartof an integratedsystem,youcan identifyobjectsusing eitherthe radar/
chartoverlay(see Radar/ChartOverlay onpage 2-23)or the cursor echo

objecton theradardisplay, the cursoris repeatedon the chart displaysoyou
cancheck the object’s identity.
